Second chances and Oklahoma

Second chance Kansas

The rain had stopped over night and the sun was out. I was thrilled with this development and got packed up and out of the room, hoping Kansas would redeem itself.

Ready to see the rest of Kansas and what else the world has to offer.

I had reached out to a bunk a biker, but I hadn’t heard back, so I was headed to a campground.

Emergency room

About 3 hours into my ride, I was fixing to wet myself. While the rest of Kansas was much nicer than what I had seen the previous day, and much less smelly, there were no shoulders in the roads and no gas stations either. At least the ride was pretty!  I finally found an emergency room and pulled in. I mean, I was almost in a state of emergency… Believe it or not, she had to take down my name and address as well as take my temperature before she would let me use the restroom! But, what relief!

A cheat

The emergency room was almost on the Kansas/Oklahoma border.  I drove the little way to the turnout at the Oklahoma sign (Oklahoma could teach the other states a few things!) And took a photo with the sign.

Oklahoma!

There was an 18-wheeler blocking the way, so I couldn’t get Lucille up there.

But she was there!

While I did this, I noticed the Welcome to Kansas sign on the other side of the street, so I cheated to make up for the photo I’d missed the previous day.

You can’t tell I was leaving, can you?

New destination

While taking my photos, the bunk a biker got back to me and told me to go to her house.  She gave me her address and i was about 3 hours away. I changed direction from the campground, to Shawnee, OK.

Those ominous clouds in the photos turned out to be a sign and right after I hit the road again, the skies opened up a poured on me. I did manage to pull over at a stop sign and get everything safe from the rain.

My bunk a biker

I got to Tommie’s house and she immediately took me with her to get her nails done. The salon was busy so we went back to her house and hopped in her slingshot. She took me for a spin and it was fun. I might need to look into getting one! But maybe not yet.

Tommie took me back to her house so I could shower and do my laundry while she went back to the mail salon. Her husband Alan came home and we spent a great evening just hanging out and talking. They are great people.

Tomorrow I’d be off for Arkansas and a friend from work.

  1. Nice to use the bunk-a-biker option. It’s free isn’t it? Good savings over a hotel or even a campground, plus a bed, shower and laundry. Smart. I hope Oklahoma is good to you. Watch out for those nasty black skies!

    1. It’s free. It’s like a community of like- minded people, helping each other out along the way. I’ve been really lucky.

      The rain had been ridiculous.

  2. I am so proud of you talking to all these strangers!!!! You are going to come back a changed woman. You scared me to death with the Emergency Room title. Don’t do that again!!!!

  3. Catherine Stone

Well, you are in a part of the country I drove through on my way from the east coast to Denver, and it’s not one I ever want/need to visit again! Stay dry and safe, my friend.
