Up Early
Today was going to be a longer day I hoped, as I was shooting for Green River, UT. The map said it would be 408 miles to the campground, so I would play it by ear.
Eureka, Nevada is pretty high in elevation, about 6,485 feet, but I would climb out of there and cross the final several passes. Seems Nevada is all up then down. It was in the low 50’s but it didn’t feel too bad.
Looney Tunes
I was cruising along, making good time when I came to a sign that said, “Loose Gravel.” I figured a truck had spilled some of its load or something. Nope! They had torn up part of the highway and it was now an oiled gravel road. I felt like I was in an episode of Looney Tunes with the signs, Loose Gravel and then Fresh Oil. Were they TRYING to kill me? I expected the coyote to jump out any minute. Lucille handled it beautifully though. We did not however maintain the posted 70 mph speed limit.
Speeding
After the asphalt came back there were some decent twisties, and it was pretty. I was going about 78, when I blew past the Welcome to Utah sign. I had to slam on the brakes to turn around and go back.

I’m there too!
Utah
The scenery slowly changed once I entered Utah. And the wind picked up. I stopped for gas in Scipio and talked to my first stranger of the day. She was concerned about me riding in the wind. We chatted a bit and then went on our ways.
Wind
From Scipio all the way to Green River the cross winds beat me up. Twice they threw me out of my lane. The big trucks weren’t having an easy time of it either and passing them was terrifying. The scenery though, was breathtaking.
Camp
I made it to the little campground. The wind was still blowing and, even with my fly on and shut, the tent filled with blowing sand. It was everywhere!

I drove Lucille down the sandy road and parked her without any trouble. I set up camp and got comfortable. This was so much fun and in spite of the wind, I was happy.
Camp set up.
I’m having a blast!
I cannot even imagine going 70-78 on a motorcycle! I just imagine you being slammed against the back of your seat. Glad you are enjoying yourself. Looks like you are camping under someone’s tree in their backyard.
There are places where the speed limit is 80! You don’t get slammed against the seat unless you just dump the throttle open!
There were a lot of homes around the campground. I’m having a great time and I wish everyone could come with me!
Maybe you remember how big and boxy Tergel is? We were pitched side-to-side in that wind and narrowly avoided a collision with a camper/trailer (pulled by a truck) that blew into our lane. I jerked the wheel away, and nearly had a heart attack. So be careful in that wind and rain (I know you are). I LOVE that you’re having a blast!!!
I do! That wind is crazy! I felt like a kite.
Don’t have a heart attack my friend!
Aw hi Deb!! <3 good job!! The winds been crazy here! Stay safe!
I’ll definitely do my best! Thanks Sarah!
The wind can be exhausting, but it’s all part of traveling and adventure on the bike. I’m overdue for a road trip! Enjoy the freedom of the ride. Love these updates. Safe travels.
Thanks Jess! I’m having a blast even though I wasn’t sure I could do it.
